This is just a reminder that the First Freedom Student Competition has kicked off for the 2011/2012 school year. This national essay and video contest offers 9th - 12th grade students an opportunity to compete for $2,500 awards as they examine the First Amendment and the history and implementation of religious freedom and freedom of conscience in American democracy and the world today.

This year, students will select a person and/or group in their community, state or region, whose present or historic rights to the free exercise of belief are accommodated or, on the other hand, challenged by the public schools. They will then research and analyze how this relates to the broader narrative of First Amendment law and the right to freedom of religion, conscience or belief in the United States. Students will research history, current events, and the impact of the First Amendment in order to make their assessment. Students must register online on or before Monday, November 14, 2011, and the postmark deadline for mailing the essay or video with its accompanying entry materials is Saturday, November 26, 2011. Winners will be announced on Thomas Jefferson’s birthday, April 13, 2012.

Frankenstein Carousel Make Up Questions: If you are absent, please write a paragraph for each carousel question you missed in class. You should have completed a total of six paragraphs at the end of the activity. Be sure to put your name and group number on the top of your paper and turn it in to Mrs. Minor when you return.

Question 1---Robert Walton is used as a catalyst for Frankenstein to tell his story. The premises of the entire novel rests on Frankenstein warning Walton to stop his mad pursuit of knowledge. What are the similarities between Frankenstein and Walton? In what ways are they and their experiences different. In a well organized essay, answer the previous questions and make an argument as to whether Frankenstein's story helps Walton.
Question 2---What is the occurrence and effect of passages about light in the "dark" novel? Search for day, light, sunlight, sun, radiant, bright and so on, and contrast these with terms related to darkness, such as night, black, darkened, gloom.

Question 3---Romantic and Gothic literature commonly use nature to convey tone and mood. In a well-organized essay, explain how Frankenstein is a characteristic Romantic and Gothic novel.
